“Inheritance”

Tamara Barschak's instrumental piece “Saudade” features in the documentary short film “Inheritance” by Hannah Levy.

Hannah Levy's remarkable documentary short “Inheritance” had its world premiere at the Unthinkable Festival in Hull on October 7th 2026.

"You never told me how loud silence can be."

Driving home to Hull after her grandpa's death, Hannah hears the news break: Israel has passed the death penalty for Palestinians only. Clearing out his house, she uncovers fragments of a Jewish family history built on flight, survival and solidarity, and learns that inheritance isn't certainty - it's the courage to question what we've been taught.

Tamara Barschak's haunting composition for cello and piano, “Saudade”, was used as part of the soundtrack to “Inheritance”. The classical composition was born out of two musical ideas; the repeated riff used in The Doors song “The End” and the piano compositions of Franz Schubert.

Saudade is a Brazilian Portuguese word that almost defies translation. It carries with it the dual sense of missing someone or something no longer in one's life and equally missing a person or a feeling that never existed to begin with,

I feel so incredibly proud that my music is part of the soundtrack to this haunting, meditative and yet visceral film; a young girl's emotional and political reckoning.
